Homebuyer Tip #38: Dealing with Clogged Drains

Posted on April 27, 2023 by Laura Sinclair

Clogged drains are a common plumbing problem that can have a serious impact on your home. When a clog occurs, water cannot flow properly and can even back up your toilet. It can be a frustrating experience, but it is also something that can be easily remedied. By identifying the cause of the clog, you can ensure that you will avoid a similar situation in the future.

How Do Drains Get Clogged?

Clogged drains can occur when debris and grime build up in the pipes of your home. This can be caused by heavy rains, hair, and soap scum. These clogs can be solved with a DIY tool or by calling a professional plumber. However, to avoid major clogging problems, it is a good idea to have your pipes cleaned regularly.

Cleaning a Clogged Drain

One of the most effective ways to clean a clogged drain is using a high-pressure jet of water. This technique is safe and has the capability to remove a number of different types of debris. A jet of water under high pressure is fast and can prevent nearly all clogs.

Another method of clearing a clogged drain is by using an air-burst cleaner. While not as effective in dry piping, this method is fast and can clear a clog in less than two hours.

Precautions If Using a Homemade Drain Cleaning Solution

If you decide to use a homemade drain cleaning solution, make sure that you follow these guidelines. Never pour grease down your drains, and do not use feminine products as they are hard to break down. Instead, use cotton balls and other biodegradable materials.

Options for Cleaning Clogged Drains

An oxidizing drain cleaner is another option. Typically, these are made up of household bleach and nitrates, which break down the organic materials that clog your drain. They are much safer to use than the caustic chemicals found in many commercial drain cleaners. The oxidation process breaks down the clog and makes it easier to unclog the pipe.

Using a plumber’s snake is another good option. This device has a coiled wire at the end and small sharp metal blades that are powered by a powerful motor. You place the coil down your drain and twist until the water starts to run freely.

Other options for a more environmentally friendly way to clean a clogged drain include using a pulse jetter and hydro-jetting. These techniques are effective in removing most clogging contaminants from the interior of your pipes.

While some of these methods are more efficient than others, the best option is probably to call a professional to handle the job for you. A professional will know how to do the job properly and will not damage your plumbing in the process. Even if you have a clogged drain, you can keep it free of clogs by having your pipes cleaned on a regular basis.

Identifying the cause of your clogged drain will help you to determine whether you need to hire a professional to come in and clean your pipes or whether you can do it yourself. Some homeowners choose to use a cheap drain cleaning service, but it’s best to stick with a reputable company that specializes in this kind of work.
